Backstabbing business partners, disloyal lovers, and a madman seeking revenge.

The madman’s plan? Send them all to hell with the pomp and circumstance an event like this deserves! Will Bobbie Flanagan, a nervous young man with nothing to lose, be able to stop him? Read this “twisted tale of revenge” (Lia Burres, Goodreads) to find out.

Picked this up after hearing about it from the writer on Google+. It is rather short (my own short story on Amazon only clocks in at about ten printed pages itself), but that doesn't detract from it. What does detract from it is the title. The title leaves you with an expectation of solution somewhere, or explanation of why each person in the house deserves their fate. What slights did they commit against the owner? What becomes of the boy? These are all left off, and you wonder why the author chose the title he did.

All that being said...

It was a page turner, while it lasted, for sure. I enjoyed reading it until its abrupt end, and didn't want to put it down until I'd seen it through. With a few tweaks to the formula, Barrus could realistically have a national seller on his hands, and I hope he gets to that point. I haven't read his other work, so do not know what that is like.

Midway Between Heaven Hell edition by SC Barrus Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I have to say, I'm not an avid short story reader, but after reading S.C Barrus' newest creation I'm probably going to check out more of these. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot from start to finish; the set up was engaging and kept getting more and more exciting with each page.

I don't want to spoil anything so I'll just say this... BUY IT NOW!!!!

Well done Mr. Barrus, very well done.
The first couple pages were a bit heavy handed and slow, but that fell away and it was a great story with a really well done ending.
I personally feel that Barrus is a great writer, with a bright future in the industry. His characters, though they seem shallowly developed, are very necessary for his plot and they seem to work well within the story. The story is original, or is at least told in a way that seems so, and Barrus boasts a solid command of language and storytelling.

Barrus could use some work syntactically. I did not feel throughout the story that his sentences really worked for him. They were more of a means of storing information to relay to a reader instead of working as literary devices in his favor. However, Barrus has done a wonderful job of setting up his story coherently. Absolutely worth a read.
A short story by the incredibly talented S.C. Barrus, Midway tells of an aborted attempt by one man to wreak revenge against a room full of persons. Barrus tells an engaging tale with vivid description and characters. Barrus's tale contains characters much too large for just a short story. His story-telling abilities, par none, carry the reader through a quick read.
Not a bad story. I like how the "Host" set his sights on everyone that used him. His first fatality shocked the other guests and threw everyone else into a panic. The total disregard that the "Host" held towards his guests was ultimately repaid to him in kind from an unexpected source. 3 stars, as there were typos and formatting errors of minor distraction and the hero could have prolonged the discomfort of the rest of the guests with further development of the story.
I liked this short by S.C. Barrus. Quite a bit actually. It reminded me a lot of Ten Little Indians - the movie based on Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None.

I had a little trouble tying everyone to the "crime", but if I were to reread it I'm sure I'd find the reasons for each.

I will read more by this author as I have time.

If you're looking for a quick affordable read, I recommend you give this a try.
A surprisingly thorough story for such a short book, I really enjoyed this tragic, dark tale.

The author does an amazing job with character development and description, with a writing style that reminds me of Edgar Allan Poe. And though this is a dark story, it has a sense of nostalgia and humor to it, set in an era that gives off a noir flare.

If you're looking for a very well written short story with a satisfying plot and characters despite its length, definitely read this one; I highly recommend it.
